I don't know if they are a different size from the later cars and I doubt that they are. They are a very neat fit and there was a special tool to fit them. To insert them, I use a 35mm socket I have for the hub-nut of a modern car. But any piece of metal, or very hard plastic tubing, which has an internal diameter that allows it to sit on the lip of the grease-cap will allow you to replace it with a couple of smart taps.
Getting them out can cause damage too. I have a blunt, flat-bladed screwdriver which, (with a bit of a knack) allows me to getly tap behind the lip, going round it at different points until it gradually loses its grip.
One thing that can work, depending on tightness and tool quality is to use a small piston ring compressor/install tool. Tighten it to the diameter of the lip of the cap, place a small block of wood on the other end, and wack it.
