Cinquecentisti, a question regarding paint experiences. I recently got myself a blasting cabinet and I'm starting to do some refinishing of bits on/around the engine. I'm curious about your experiences with various paints and the temperatures. The Fiat has been my only air-cooled car, so I don't have much personal experience to go by on how various paints hold up in the engine bay.

Specifically, I'm looking for experiences with tin work and heat shields. I'm planning on using engine paint for the tin work, but do you think it's necessary for the heat shields, or will a higher-temp exhaust paint be necessary? Is engine paint even critical on tin work, or would a regular paint suffice?

My current gameplan is to use engine paint on tin work, exhaust paint on manifolds/muffler, and regular paint elsewhere.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt, I for one have always used powder coating on my fan housing, thermostat housing, exhaust heat shield and lower engine cowling. The process is extremely durable and unless scratched is permanent. It is able to withstand the heat of contact with the engine and in the engine bay too. I you use the RAL colour scheme you can choose almost any colour you want (y)(y)

Ian,

I'm a big fan of powder coating as well and may wind up there eventually. Since my final iteration of the motor is still in flex, I was tackling easy bits here and there. I'm blasting, priming, painting, and clear-coating for now, but when I do the real motor build, I'll probably go the powder coat route depending on how the tin work looks at that point.

Your motor looks awesome though. What exhaust is that?

Cheers.

For me i don't like powder paint. If it's on something that flexes it will crack and humidity creeps under and rust sets in. Or it flakes off.
I know that many will say if it's done correctly no problem but i have seen many powder painted things all with the same problem.
Personal choice i suppose:)
Alan

Hi Matt, Thanks, That's the not-so-hot engine that I am using as a spare should the need arise ???? The HOT engine is completing running in milage in the car and will be on the rolling road soon. The exhaust is a four piece stainless steel CSC (two into one) that fits direct to the head. Axel Gerstl sell them ( part number 03062) It is rather loud though being more or less straight through :devil::devil:

Although I think that I know the answer Ian, just for other peoples information, what system are you using to mount the silencer? Standard '126' silencer clamps or the system where the silencer is mounted up against a plate (secured to the normal 4 studs) and held in place with big springs that go round the silencer?

Hi Tom, I have a set slightly modified 126 clamps to fit the silencer as it is slightly fatter than normal!!!!! I am aware of your mounting system with springs and I think I will be procure the same for the 'Hot' engine in time.
Ian.
