There you go, quite a weird debacle to say the least.....

I am going to start the car tonight and try and ascertain if there is any damage to the engine/gearbox as that might explain if it had been left in gear or not.....

Other than that I'm just going to put it down to 'one of those things and rebuild it back up as I source parts as at the moment my cash and focus is elsewhere so this little nightmare was pushed into another barn last night........

Hi Rob, sorry to read this story, I'm sure you can rebuild it. Did the wheel survive, be a shame to lose one of those?

Cheers
Gary

Hi Gary

Yes the wheel survived, we had been parked up about 3 hours and a Range Rover pulled into the lay by. A guy got out and checked if we were ok and then told me precisely where the wheel was. Obviously went back to get.

Looks like the thread was abused but rather than replace the shaft they just fitted a new nut. DO check the other side. The threads might look OK, but are likely to have had the same levels of abuse.
If new shafts are not available, a machine shop specialist can cut the thread spigot off the shaft, turn a socket into the end, weld in a new spigot and cut a new thread.

New stub-axles are not difficult to source---Axel gerstl (to name just one source) has a selection---at about E97 each. I cmpletely agree with "DaveMcT"--check the other side as well--better safe than sorry
