Technical Cover under flywheel

Whilst replacing my sump after drilling and fitting an oil temperature sender i noticed i can see half the flywheel! Is this normal, the reason I ask is - there are a couple of threaded holes about 12" apart it looks as if there should be a cover or something to go into them, when looking under the car i can see the flywheel going round, is this normal?

Hi.

I don't think so.

When I first got my car a few years back I could see the flywheel too. Then looking through Haynes manual, workshop manual and spare parts sites I realised it should have a cover and discovered the bolt holes (three - one in the middle and one each side). I ordered one and fitted easily enough although one of the three bolts had sheared off in the past so mine is currently held on by two. I assume the cover was "lost" some time in the past.

I guess it is needed to avoid mud, stones and water getting in where they shouldn't.

There are in fact 3 screws that hold the flywheel tray in place. The 3rd screw is at the front of the main body of the gearbox. All 3 screws are short(12mm) 6mm x 1mm screws---I use cap-head screws (i.e. no plain shank---all thread)

Listen to the hobbler! I am about to fit mine after fine-tuning my clutch engagement, which you can see perfectly through that gap. I would say the part is very critical for general road use and if you drive on any dusty/rocky roads, well it could very easily be mechanically tragic.

New cover arrived unfortunately when i offered it up to the flywheel it wouldn't fit as the Abarth 4 litre sump was in the way, so I had to cut 1.5 mms off the back( where it fits next to the sump) then none of the 3 holes lined up, the only thing I could do was to drill 3 x 8.5 mms holes into the original ones & use a washer on each one. In the end of worked, but a real fiddle. So be aware, if anyone has a 4litre Abarth sump it's not straight forward to fit a new flywheel cover.
