My 126 powered 1969 500l has developed some starter problems and the starter has a very intermittent function. I did not have time to have a look at it yet. Based on experience what is the most common problems with the starters and does it exist some overhaul kits?
I was thinking that it might bad contact on the contractor or it might need new brushes.

If you look at a previous thread entitled "slow starter" i think that most of your problems will be answered, such as:- check the earth strap is in good condition, might need new brushes or the commutator cleaned. If you haven't got the time, it isn't a difficult job to remove on the '650' (3 nuts, a couple of wires and the operating cable) and any competent auto electrical shop should be able to overhaul it for you. Don't forget to isolate the battery prior to starting to remove the starter! Where are you based?

As well as the above possible causes listed above by 'the hobbler', it might also be a problem with the starter switch that is mounted on top of the starter motor - this is what is mechanically operated when you pull the start lever inside the car.

If you click on the 'Downloads' section at the top of the page, then select '500 Classic', you can download both a workshop manual and an owner's handbook for the 500. In this workshop manual, Chapter 11 - Electrical, covers the overhaul of the starter motor and shows all the parts.

As regards starter motor spares, if you input Fiat 500 Classic spare parts into your search engine, a list of spares suppliers should come up. Afaik, no one does a kit of parts for the starter motor, but many do individual parts - I think most necessary parts are still available. I'd suggest stripping your starter motor for inspection before ordering any parts - it might need very little, possibly just clean the commutator and fit new carbon brushes as 'the hobbler' has already suggested.

Perfect and thanks. I think it is the start switch that is a bit intermittent. I did not realise that it was actually in the manual. I will have a look when I am back home. I am away working for a few weeks.

So I removed that starter and had a look at it. The switch on the starter was very burnt and worn. A new switch and at the same time some fresh brushes and she spins like she was new. Cheap too.
