Hello All, I’ve just completed a restoration of my 500 and interested to register as a vehicle of historic interest (VHI). Prior to restoring the car I used it for 2 seasons and had already had it registered as a historic vehicle so tax exempt, with a revised classification on its log book.

I’ve tried to read guidance online. I completed the V112 declaration form went to the post office applied for it to be taxed with the V112. The lady simply scanned the log books bar code gave me a receipt for the free tax and had a cursory look at the V112 and said “that’s fine”.. I guess I was expecting something more meaningful to reassure me I have correctly followed the process and the car is now tax and mot legal for road use.

Had anyone done this or gone through the process did they get/do anything different?

Thanks James

I did it over the phone. Answered a few questions and the chap updated the system. Only took a couple of minutes.

I felt a little unsure of the process before I went to the post office. I expected to have an updated document or something similar, but that doesn't happen!

I spoke to someone at the DVLA about it before going to the post office. They either state vehicles as MOT'd or not MOT'd they do not have a third option for MOT exemption.

They have added a clause to the system to state that any car without current MOT that is older than 40 years does not raise any red flags.

I asked what happens with the police and she said "They should be aware" I asked for something more substantial than the word 'Should' since I'd rather avoid being pulled over for no reason, but that was all she could offer.

I'm not sure what the purpose of the V112 form is since there is no status change on their system.

There is a letter available (probably on-line) which the various classic car organisations have recommended that a driver of a "MOT exempt" car should carry with them. I will try and find it and put the details onto the Forum---or, does a Forum member have this letter and can advise us where to obtain it. Because, despite what the DVLA assure us, not ALL coppers are bright enough to be aware of this exemption!

This is one of many links to that letter:

https://www.tr-register.co.uk/uploa...n-declaration-with-Press-Release-23.01.19.pdf

It explicitly states that no formal application need be made to register a car of 40 years or older as "of historic interest" (y)

Apparently, as of 19th May 2019, one person had been threatened with prosecution for the offence of not having an MOT.

In my experience of driving for nearly 40 years, the Police are smart enough not to stop a car on suspicion of not having an MOT; that will usually only come to light as a result of being stopped for another valid reason. In more than 7,000 miles' driving since curtailing my annual visit, to allow the Kwik-Fit fitters to spend a light-hearted half-hour messing with my car, I have neither been stopped nor in any way sensed any special interest from any police-officers regarding the car. :)

I'm pretty sure that their number-plate identification technology is programmed to skip the MOT alert for cars with zero rate road-fund licences that are properly insured. :worship:

No that's fine, all my classic vehicles taxed exactly the same way, post office not interested in the V112 at all
