Had the odd "at speed" engine starting to die. I was not confident with the existing fuel pump as I was not sure how old the pump was. Could have been original in which case, the best part of 44 years. So new baby installed this morning. Along with new spacer, rod etc.

Had some serious spurt when I cranked over the engine without the pipe connected to the carb (y)

Please do yourself a favour and get some proper fuel hose clips, Jubilee clips should never be used on fuel hose as they don’t grip all around the hose and can so easily leak, especially as you say there was “some serious spurt”, and the next thing is an engine bay fire ?
