Not sure if my coil and electronic distributor run off the battery or need juice from the generator. Want to drive 20 minutes, daytime(no lights ) then charge battery. Will have my new voltage regulator in a few days

You can, so you’re on the right track.

The 12v’s comes down from the battery it is regulated by the VR but at the VR on the same terminal 30 is another red wire that goes back up to the fuse box and in turn to the ignition switch, which when turned on it sends 12v’s to the coil.

You would need to disconnect either the thick brown wire + on the dynamo or the other end of it at the VR on terminal 51, then you would be solely reliant on battery power. But I don’t know how far it would get you? Would I recommend it probably no.
