I have a 123 distributor on its way and thought I should get a Bosch "blue" coil to go with it, as recommended by 123. I ordered one locally that looked like the one pictured on the 123 website but have just been told it's out of stock. I can't find another supplier in NZ that stocks it. The supplier offered a Viper dry coil as an alternative but reading on here, that coil requires a ballast resistor?

However, to confuse matters, VW Beetle parts places stock a Bosch Blue that looks different and is more expensive. Are they basically the same but with different coloured blue paint?

My car is a standard 500F with 499cc engine.

Myself and Peter both run the Bosch Blue with 123. You want the one with the part number 0 221 119 027. It’s what VW Beetles use as well.

Tony

Just noticed the one on the trademe link!

Thanks Tony, the Ratwell site is just what I needed. The Trademe one is the one I bought only to find it's out of stock. However, the one in the other link is available here (at twice the price!!). It appears to be the real deal although it has blue packaging instead of yellow.

Who knew coil shopping could be so fraught?

supplementary question A: I have this spare, new coil that came with a bunch of parts leftover from someone else's 500 build so I'm assuming it originally came from a supplier of 500 parts. From what little I can find on the net it's the equivalent of a Bosch GT40 coil. According to my multi-meter it reads 3.4 ohms primary and 8.00 kohms secondary. Will this work as an alternative to the Bosch Blue? Or does the "blue" have something extra to increase performance?

It pretty much meets the resistance of the Bosch Blue. I would give it a go first before forking out any more money.
