Went to see a great little 500 L the other day, with a 650 and synchro box. Very enjoyable drive.

Has anyone seen these wheels before though? They had 145x 12 tyres on them.

And I couldn’t work out if it had disc brakes or not. Took a pic and it looks like the original drums from the outside but for some reason I though the 650 upgrade basically required disc upgrades.

My thinking is if this little car fell into my arms, putting the original skinny wobbly wheels back on would be a priority but I know you need some kind of adapter kit to fit disc brakes on the original wheels

Hi
I suggest to leave the original wheel you have. And with the rim you have it touches the caliper. So in first picture shows your back rims you need to cut a little of the inside corner like where shown in the first picture where the red dot is. The yellow Fiat 500 2nd picture it has disc brake in the front also i drilled a hole in the middle of rim and welded a bolt in the back and put the original hubcaps. If you don’t understand something let me know. I am always here to answer questions. If you need any parts or disc brakes let me know I have everything.

Sorry I forgot make sure to do the modification on your spare tire as well. If you ever have a flat you can use the spare for the back & front.[emoji106]

but for some reason I though the 650 upgrade basically required disc upgrades.

The fiat 126 never came with disc brakes, just a different drum brake setup. My 500 is running a 650cc engine with late 126 brakes, I don't have issues with it at the moment. I would leave the brakes unless you find them lacking.

I think they're the ones that I like which were standard on the "R".

I agree with Peter and 'Mod500'---if the brakes work well, leave 'as is'. I have a well tuned 652cc engine in my 500, and until last winter I had Mk2 126 drums all the way round (98pcd wheel bolt pattern). Generally speaking, I had no problem with the drum brakes; the reason that I changed up to front (and ONLY front is required) discs is (a) because I will eventually (next winter's job) be fitting a full-house '695' into the car and, (b)--I wanted too! Drive the car for a bit before you make a decision. If you are happy with the brakes, leave well alone.

unless I am mistaken your question was "are these disc brakes" to which the answer is no they are standard drum brakes and steel 126 wheels

The wheels you have are almost certainly Fiat 500R rims which were originally fitted with 125 x12 tyres. The rim width is 3.5" and they shared the same design as the early 126 which had 4" rims to accommodate 135 X 12 tyres.

Thanks all for the above responses - very informative and helpful each and every one!

I'd thought they were R wheels but then couldn't find them online even with a google.

Interesting that the tyres, based on Toshi's words, could be too wide for the rim. Guessing it's due to the poor availability/high cost of narrower tyres here.

Great to know though - I don't know why anyone ever mods these cars away from original!
