Hi Folks

Have just purchased an aluminium rocker cover and I've noted comments on the forum about fitting etc.

However, how easy should it be to remove the original? All the nuts and washers are off and I've loosened the ones holding the FZD. Also the one holding the tin cover thermostat top. But the rocker cover doesn't want to budge.

I've tapped it a few times with a hammer and tried to lever under the lip. Have I missed a fixing anywhere or is it just fused down?

I thought this should just pull off. Any tips?

Tim

Have you got fibre washers (as you should have) under the 2 retaining nuts Tim? These can sometimes be 'spread' enough that they hold onto the stud threads. You may find that you have to wind these off before the rocker cover will lift off. Don't forget to fit a new gasket (ruberoid type) with the new rocker cover, and be prepared to do a bit of 'fettling' before it will sit properly, especially around the base of the inlet manifold.

Thanks Tom. I don't have fibre washers but was looking to add rubber ones, so fibre would be an option. This may be the cause of an oil leak?

I'm wondering if the tin cover is caught in the stud threads.

Could be Tim---should have a fibre washer, then a flat washer and finally a ny-loc nut. I have seen 'dome' ny-loc nuts sold for this job--look very tidy!

Thanks Tom. Will look out for those dome nuts. I have some fibre washers somewhere.

Just need to figure out how to prise the tin away from the stud threads, if that's the problem.

It usually comes off quite easily with some gentle persuasion. Not sure what's holding it in place, but Hobbler's right (he very often is!!) the fibre washers could be holding it in place. Or the gasket itself could have just bonded itself to the mating faces over time and needs peeling off.

I tried to do this mod a couple of years ago, but found that the studs were slightly too short for the aluminium cover that I'd bought, there wasn't quite enough thread showing for the nuts to take hold once the new cover was in place.

I did buy some longer studs that are specifically made for this issue, and never used them. As I knew that my studs had been helicoiled in once upon a time, I thought I'd just leave them be, and refitted the tin cover!!

Feel free to drop me a message if you experience the same issue, and need the longer studs. I'd be happy to sent them to you.
