Dave, I don't suppose you've considered fitting a twin-choke (downdraft) carb from a Fiat 850 Coupe (843/903cc) suitably (slightly) rejetted?

But, nowadays, I suppose the problem would be where to get such a carb to experiment with....

(Memo to self:- must have a rummage in my shed to see what I've kept...
apart from the SU's, of course :D ).

AL.

That is the Weber 30DIC carb that I have a great interest in also. When I bought the 795cc Alquati engine about 9 years ago the original owner told me the original carb was a 30DIC but he then switched to a Dellorto FZD. The engine came with an Alquati manifold to take the 30DIC and I was lucky enough to find a used one at an auto jumble. As a winter project about 6 years ago I tried to get my hands on more of the same carbs, parts and information. After some months of research, negotiating and trading in the UK and worldwide I ended up with the best part of eleven Weber 30DIC carbs for the project ranging from early examples with the 21/23 venturies through to the later 23/23 type and even an American spec one which I would not recommend. I robbed some parts from the American one for the other carbs then sold what was left of that one leaving me with ten to rebuild. Had to search the web again for parts but finally they all came together. The aim then was to put together a conversion "kit" for the 500/126 engine so I bought some manifolds from 500 Mania and some of the purpose made air filters from the US. One carb was spoken for from the start and a few "kits" were sold. One carb sits on my rebuilt engine that I had some success with as I experimented with jetting last year. The remaining ones are safely tucked up in a box under a bed ?
Oh and yes I did have one on an 850T camper van along with the complete Sport Coupe engine and gearbox, it went quite well !

Patience is a virtue they do say. The momentum with this project stopped mainly due to the fact that the butterfly spindle on the carb was seized solid. I think it spent a year or two exposed to the weather so after soaking and spraying with various fluids, applying heat and some force the butterflies are now fine. So looks like a project for the new year getting the carb back together with a suitable jet set :)
