My starter cable snapped as I was about to leave work last night. Easy enough to start without it, but I had no spare at home.


I bought a few ferrule sets a while ago and they are very useful for temporary cables. This was a standard bike brake cable.
I made a temporary accelerator cable 2 years ago. I haven't replaced it so I suppose it's not temporary any more!

I temporarily mounted the tachometer in my Fiat 1500 under the dashboard with sturdy tie wire about 25 years ago.... its still on my to do list...
 
I am using vespa cable lock nuts at the end of the cable so i can adjust the length of it since i have reroute the starter cable. Those are very useful.:D

On the topic of starter cables, if anyone has any brilliant suggestions on routing the cable for the side mounted 126 engine starter, I’d appreciate them. I’m having a very hard time getting it situated so that it won’t keep snapping off the heater box-mounted plastic cable guide. It seems that the guide (which isn’t very strong to begin with) is bearing too much angled cable force; it’s the pivot point for the run of the starter cable back to the lever. I’ve tried to get the cable S straight to the starter as possible, but it’s not easy. The new starter lever and spring are also quite stiff, adding to the problem. I’ve got a new starter cable holder made from brass on order, from the Czech Republic, but who knows when that will show up. Meanwhile I have just one or two remaining unbroken cable holder clips left.
 
I can't remember if it applies to the 500 or the 126 (or both), but in an emergency (e.g. broken starter cable) it is possible to reach in over the back of the engine and operate the lever on the starter manually.

I'm not saying it's easy to do (need a longish arm) or that the engine when it rocks on it's mountings while being turned over, won't intermittently crush your arm but it can be done. :)

It is easy to start manually with a piece of wood stick or something on the 126 engine. As for the cable routing I am not using the plastic guide but I have use the metal clamp that comes with the cable and screw it on the floor in the side of the metal duct. There is no stop like the plastic anymore at the end of the cable and works ok.

I haven't seen those before. That looks like a good idea. Very good for a spares kit.


MY accelerator cable is using an earth pin from a 13A plug. It's been there for over a decade so It's become part of the family

Are you using a 126 engine with 500 heater box?
I know they are mounted at different angles, that might make a difference. There is no clip on mine, I have only recently discovered that the clip exists. I have been using a cable tie to hold the outer against the handbrake cable.
 
Yes I am using the 126 / 500R cable. I will just try again, using an inordinate number of cable ties to strengthen it along its run.
