More on the infamous over heating with the bambibos! When talking to a ex-fiat employee at the car show at Bywell. He pointed out that I should have some lugs on the top of the spark plug to avoid the cold air escaping from blowing across the engine. Until tonight when I started it and revved it, did I realise what he meant. There must be literally no air going across the engine and all out the top.

I haven't been able to find any of these rubber lugs? Anyone know where to get some? 20180920_214754.jpeg

Ricambio sell them.

Many thanks - no idea why i couldnt find that. Much appreciated [emoji106]

So....he asks embarrassed :eek:...do I assume that all 500 engines should have these? Mine never has (500cc) since I got it and the large holes round each plug lead have always terrified me (so regularly plugged with something when working on the engine to stop nuts/bolts disappearing ). Looks like something to add to the next order :(

Just ordered a pair off eBay £4. I couldn't believe how much air blow out the holes when the engine was revved. I can understand now how the engine will be lacking a lot of airflow from missing such a simple part.

Yes, definitely part of the air cooled design. Air flows across the top of the block and continues down the right side. If you leave the spark plug holes uncovered, you're letting cooling air escape and diminishing cooling capability. There's a lot of that air flow routing stuff on this engine.

They look like this installed. Mine where missing too.

I always enjoy looking at other engines to see how they look :)
I see that you have one of the repro modern Weber carbs fitted. The engine earth strap would normally fix to one of the bolts holding the Dynamo bracket to the crankcase and run across to one of the rear panel studs. Clutch arm return Spring looks to be missing and do you have a syncro gearbox fitted there ?

When fitting these spark plug covers, remember to fit them as shown in the little picture on the Ricambio site i.e. the outer lip goes into the hole to locate the covers so that the air flow doesn't push the covers upwards. You need to rotate them also for the best fit - there's should be a step on the circumference to take account of the difference in thickness of the cylinder head flange and the cowling sheetmetal. Hi Hodgy, Any air lost from the cooling fan (at any point) is costing you money in terms of engine performance and longevity, these engines run hot, but not too hot - overheating is bad news. Trust me I've been there :eek::eek:
