Hi Guys,

Was just looking for a recommendation for a tow bar that would fit a '67 500F.

Preferably something that wouldn't require a lot of modification.

Thanks as always for your help!

I believe someone makes replicas of the original tow bars that were fitted to 500s... sorry I can't remember who does them, I'm some one will know...
they mount using the rear panel mounting bolts.

Seeing as the OP says Tow Bar or 'A FRAME', I'm left wondering if he wants to tow something with his 500 or wants to tow his 500 with something else.

I always thought an 'A Frame' was attached to the front of a vehicle so it could be towed behind another vehicle e.g. Motor home?

If anybody is thinking of using an A frame to tow here in Spain. They are illegal

Unless you have a way to operate all of the brakes on the car you are towing, they are technically illegal even in the UK. The Government website has withdrawn its previous advice pending a review...it can only mean that the Law will be tightened because in practise, by many accounts, the application of the rules has been a bit hit and miss.

Having said all that, I've got one and used it a couple of times for moving the car; once when restoring and once to recover it when water got into the petrol; but I've never taken it more than about 5 miles. It could actually be towed very easily all day.

How does the A frame attach to the underneath of the 500

Very simple and quick to do. The two arms of the frame each have a welded-on, upstanding pin which is placed in front of the leaf-spring as widely apart as possible. (On other cars they would be against some other static part of the frame or suspension).
On each side, a heavy-duty chain which is welded to the pin is guided over the back of the spring, pulled tight and then the hook of a ratchet-strap is placed in a convenient link in the chain. The slack is taken up by the ratchet and the job is done.

I use an A frame regularly to tow my 71 500L behind my motorhome, it has an inertia braking system making it fully legal, (in UK anyway). The problem is with anyone trying to adapt a 500 to A frame use is that it is not easy to rig up a suitable bracket on the front of the car as there is no chassis as such to attach it to. The bracket I designed is quite complex and intricate and was only feasible as I had an engineering/fabrication company at the time and spent a lot of time designing and fabricating it.

 But, but, but this could scratch the paint on the leaf-spring!
