Quick question- is the gear shift lever supposed to rotate freely? I’m not talking about it being loose or rattly, just whether it’s supposed to be tight in one position rotationally. Imagine if the shift knob had a logo on it or a shift pattern. You wouldn’t want it to rotate (talking about the whole lever, not the knob), so that you’d need to frequently turn it back upright. Well if I had a logo knob, or printed shift pattern, that’s what would probably be happening to me. My shift lever Rotates, and I can’t detetrmine if there’s a nut on the bottom of the lever that needs tightening. Given its spring loaded design to allow it to be pressed down to access reverse gear, I’d assume it should be the way it is - turnable in either direction, but not loose.

I just want to make sure I don’t inadvertently spin off a nut at the bottom of the lever and have it come off while under way. I tried to look at it from up top, but couldn’t get a good look just by removing the boot and console.

Mines the same and has been since I bought it 5 years ago, often wondered though.

The gear lever is a straight rod with a ball at the bottom and then a shaft with a thread attached to that. The shaft with thread goes through a hole in a cup and the ball then sits in this cup and can rotate in it. There is a nut that attaches to the shaft and this stops the lever from being able to move up and down. If I remember correctly it is a nyloc nut so should not rotate loose
