Can anyone tell me about the flame trap pipe my fiat 500 is missing it and I ordered the flame trap which I got today and can’t find the hose anywhere. Is it just a rubber hose and if so what is the inside diameter of it so I can go buy some hose. Also do I just push the flame trap in to the hose.

Is this the horizontal tube that runs between the air filter and carb intake?
If so I believe it’s meant to be metal and rigid however mine is fitted with a rubber hose and I’ve had no issues.

From memory it’s around 56mm diameter on the outer edge but it’s been a while since I measured it and I’m away from the car right now.

It will depend on which engine you have. Items 8 in the diagrams below are 2 examples of the flame trap. The hose should be made of an oil proof material
.

It is smaller and if I had to guess I would say the inside diameter is probable 9/16 just trying to verify

Anyone with one know??

As far as I know, on the 499 engine, the flame-trap should be just inside the end of the narrow-bore, rubber pipe where it pushes on to the smaller spigot on the air -cleaner lid.
This position is changed to being pushed inside the small spigot on the rocker cover on 652 engines.
I guess it was changed to protect the air-cleaner lid, which was plastic in later engines. I prefer to place it in the end of the rubber pipe.

THis is getting off topic. The question is what is the pipe made out of and what is the size of it. I know where the flame trap goes I just don’t know the pipe size and if it is just rubber hose and outside and Inside diameter size.

Measure the outside diameter of the metal pipes that the hose connects to. Buy hose with a matching inside diameter.
.

You have all the information you need for the size of the hose on the car.

Any oil proof flexible rubber hose will be OK. If the hose you use collapses at the bend(s), insert a spring inside it to stop it collapsing
.

MINE is missing the hose that’s why I asked what’s the size of it. But I will do that and measure the metal part it goes on.

Everyone who contributes regularly to this Forum has a habit of being very helpful and answering questions asked in a way that might help a variety of people, including the person who asked the question. ;) They also regularly and often quite interestingly stray off-topic. I think this makes for an engaging, friendly and very conversational Forum. (Sorry, just strayed ever so slightly off-topic).
Your original questions included "do I just push the flame trap in to the hose". So now you have your answer and Davren, who was being very helpful with other comments wondered, "I don't think all 500 engines have the flame trap, but you probably know more about that than I do!", so the answer has been given to that as well.
If you want real off-topic, try this. ;) from the "Things might be a bit wonky today" thread. :D

The flexible breather pipe supplied to me from Van der Laan in The Netherlands is 330mm long and has a bore diameter of 14mm.
It's made of a fairly soft, black rubber with no markings or stampings.
I have an original one for the 650 engine somewhere and that one is less flexible and does have some markings which I would show if I could find it:eek:; it is made from a more rigid type of red rubber.

Weird I don’t have this hose on my D
I have a breather hose that runs down behind the engine.

At the risk of going off topic, but to clarify for information purposes only, the 499 engine fitted to the D has several differences with one being that it doesn't have a closed breather system as per later cars but simply vents fumes to the atmosphere via a hose down the back of the engine.

With apologies for hyjacking the thread. :D
