Hi .I must be lucky in that my footbrakes are good but my handbrake is useless. It has new shoes and cable. . I dont know the best position of the pullt under the lever and does it make any diffence. It feels like its working at the lever but it would't hold it on the slightest slope..
I am only just getting to use it and I went on the motorway with it and got 67 mph out of it which I dont think is to bad. Although even the slightest incline slowed it down . Anyway has anyone any ideas about the handbrake.
Thanks Bryan

I presume the cable is free and its adjusted ? Its posible that the cable has slipped off the pulley under the ratchet of the handbrake lever.

I will have a look at that tomorrow weather permitting as its ouside at the moment .

I had a similar problem recently---hand-brake suddenly went from 3 clicks (just) to 5 clicks, and very poor holding ability--and it was only 3 days to the MOT! problem turned out to be the pivot-pin for the hand-brake linkage INSIDE the rear drum had fallen out (the split-pin had obviously broken--but don't know why) on just one side. Luckily, the pin was still rattling around inside the drum, so it was just a matter of refitting the pin with a new washer and split-pin. result?--hand-brake back to 3 clicks, and a brake performance that kept the MOT examiner happy. I thnk I have suggested previously that that same clevis pin (as it is on many other Fiats which use the same design) is prone to seizure. When it does, you get no leverage and the handbrake will be rubbish It's also possible to miss putting the operating forks in the correct slots.

By the way, as you're "on the road" again Tom, I would love to see some posing pictures of The Beastie. :)
