Hi All,

Does anyone know if the D and F crankshafts are the same?

I don't have a D parts book for the engine. Sone parts sites list their cranks as N/D/F/L etc whereas others list theirs as F onwards. Confusing.

I have just had a bearing go in the 500F engine I have just rebuilt. I got a bunch of new parts from the Netherlands, pistons, and bearings amongst them. The rings on the piston kits were rubbish (2mm ring gap) and I suspect the bearings were as well - maybe oval?? The measured up fine, but they only lasted 30 minutes in the car.

I have a 500D crankshaft here and a set of bearings for it. Does anyone know if they are the same as the 500F/L?? I can't see any obvious differences but maybe someone with more experience can shed some light on any differences please?

Many thanks
Chris

I do not think that the crankshaft changed throughout the production of the air cooled cars until the water cooled 126 Bis came along with an improved profile crank. I bought some new big end shells a while back from my local motor factors and it said on the box that they are suitable for Fiat 500/126 1957 to 1996.
Apart from being a different design the the Bis crank fits the air cooled engines also and is regarded as an upgrade.
I had a pile of sad looking cranks from various 500s & 126s in the corner of my garage so I put them all in for a regrind and you cannot tell the difference between them.

I have had to bin my D crank as it was too badly damaged on one of the journals due to a seizure.
I am fitting a 126 crank. I cant see any difference apart from a number.
There may the odd change due to manufacturer change and using a different cast, but the dimensions all appear to be the same.

the one difference that catches people out with N/D and later engines is the timing sprockets.. they are different, so not sure if the casings are also different... as I don't have any engines in bits can't say what if any there is.....

I could have let you have another D engine Sean .. you would have had an "original car" then....

The timing gears are different? In what way??

I have lost all my notes etc on 500s .. arghhh 1tb drive went down, recoverying it slowly..... but 80,000 files takes time..

from what I remember the part numbers are definitely different and my Italian mates comments that it stands out further or such, and using a later one can cause it to lock up...

It is too easy to list parts for N/D/F/L but the 479 engines are definitely different in many ways...
