Brake master cylinder

Hi
How easy/hard is it to get to the brake master cylinder & replace it. Is it worth doing new lines & hoses while I'm at it?

Re: Brake master cylinder

It all depends on how old the lines are. Mine were so old the connections at the wheel end were fused to the rubber lines (front wheels) and brake cylinders (rear wheels). So i changed them.

The master cylinder is easy to change, just 2 nuts holding it onto the brake pedal assembly, and then 3 brake lines go to it, and the flexible brake line from the brake fluid reservoir goes to the top of it.

Its well worth the 100 to change everything. If you want to change the master cylinder you will find that the three brakelines attached difficult to undo without damaging the hex nuts.

Hi
Thanks for the offer but I have already bought one. Looks like I might have to look at getting some lines though

Re: Brake master cylinder

Don't forget that the lines are available for both 1st and 2nd series, which means that the nipples on the first series lines are shorter. Make sure you figure out which series you have.

If you replace the brake lines make sure you get copper or corrosion resistant ones. Also if you are going to replace the lines then to make the removal of the hex head ferrules easy just cut through the metal line so you can get a ring spanner or socket on there.

Re: Brake master cylinder

Better than cutting the brake pipes (although, if you are going to renew the old pipes it won't really matter) is to buy a proper 'brake-pipe spanner'. These are ring spanners with the end reinforced as they have a section cut out of them to allow you to slip what is effectively a ring spanner over the brake pipe and on to the hex of the union. Being that there isn't a lot of space around the master-cylinder, it might be wise to obtain 2 such spanners, and cut one down to a length that can easily be used around the master-cylinder--they cost between 10 and 15 new.

Re: Brake master cylinder

As hobbler mention it is proper to buy t
the special open end spanner, but ofcourse you gotta face Murphy's law here because even with the special tool sometimes those soft metal nuts are impossible to remove and the hex shape is already deformed or damaged from the previous owner You gonna need it for the installation anyway.
As for your question if they look acceptable leave them as is, if their general shape is bad better replace them.
