Hi

Advise please!

Just fitted a rear pressed aluminium "standard" UK size trimmed to fit a rear chrome surround which has worked fine.
I have the matching standard huge front rectangular (legal) front plate but I really like the small Italian 11" x 3" front surround that I have.

Has anyone fitted one of these with a small pressed plate to fit? Causes lots of hassle? Been pulled over? Or seems ok, as it's on a classic 'show' car?

I realise it will cause MOT problems though.....

Cheers!
M

As you can see from the picture I have a small front plate on my 62 D. When I spoke to the number plate suppliers I was told that I was completely legal putting this plate on because, if the car had been imported in 1962, that size plate would have been legal in that year. It gets lots of comments at car shows mainly to the tune of "Asking to get nicked with that" and I get fed up repeating what I was told. I've not been pulled up and have had many coppers look over the car, plus my MOT tester accepted the plate without problem so that's one answer, if your car is of similar age. I'm sure other answers will come!

Hi Ian

Er.... it's 1972, RHD and has always been registered in the UK!
I've been told to keep the large plate in the car;) Your front plate looks so much better though. May I ask who made the plate up for you?

Hi Mike,

I agree with you, it does look nice :D:D. Given the age of your car I would do exactly as you've been advised: carry the large plate (but fit the small one) maybe stand the large plate in the windscreen while travelling (y)

Hi,
As the car was registered before 1975 you can use classic (black and silver) plates IF the car is taxed in the "classic car" class. If this is the case you will probabaly get away with small plates too. Its a rolling 40 year rule since 2015 so now a car registered before 1977 can use classic plates.

Mine will be allowable on U.K. roads ( kind of)....Prova would be a made up show plate

Opportunity here to take the mickey...... please tell what Prova is!?

I think that Ian was making a tongue in cheek, witty comment and Andrew possibly sort of missed that and gave a serious answer.:D
It seems that Italian car development allowed for a special, universal plate which would have "PROVA" on it. This means "Test" and would allow the car to have a certain amount of immunity from monitoring by the Constabulary.

Thanks for the explanation Peter!

Although 'Maggie' my car isn't cold starting well, I may venture out today with a black and white ally plate on the rear and a modern plastic one on the front.... I like to buck the trend!

Last question of the week please... I have a new set of stainless sill cover / kick plates. Should they fit completely over the door seal or does the curved bit sit in the groove in the rubber??

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!(y)

Hi M, where did you get the front plinth and chrome surround from please?

thanks
Rob

I have "Italian" sized number plates on my car, which due to the age of my car (1972) are silver+black. So far, I have NOT been stopped by 'the boys in blue', even had them give me a 'thumbs-up when alongside my Fiat! BUT, I do carry a set of 'normal' plates in the car at all times, and have made sure that they fit onto the same mounting brackets/frame as the silver/black plates---just in case! The honest answer is, technically they are illegal, but it would have to be a real 'jobsworth' copper to nick you---the paperwork (by him!) would not justify the action.
