This seems a very trivial problem, but it will hold up my 500 becoming roadworthy.

No horn – at least some of the time! I had a forage amongst some rotting Fiat's in the car breakers' yard near me and found a better connector ring. Picture shows new ring fitted.

It's better than the previous one, but only works when turning the steering wheel to the right. Nothing on a left turn.

Any tips from anyone on how to get a good constant connection? Should the non-secured sides of the ring be bent upwards, or is it more the opposite, keep them flatter?

Or is it just that there are never any potential hazards when turning left? Somehow I don't think the Transport Agency will wear that.:)

This is basically a negative switch, the live is connected directly to the horn and when you press the centre steering wheel the circuit completes and "PARP".. if it only works sometimes try connect a wire to various parts and to a suitable earth to work out exactly where the fault is

My memory is hazy Tim, but I echo that previous reply. I had an intermittent problem at first and it was because the big spring had got slightly distorted to one side, so when it was compressed, the coil didn't always contact properly. I cold explain better if I had it in my hand.
I remember carefully extending the spring; with a lot of trial and error it worked.

I had this problem when the horn would only work when turning the wheel. My fix, look at the plastic bullet cone just down the shaft from the connector ring. There is a set screw; undo it and snug the cone up to the ring and tighten it back up. This fixed my issue.

Thanks Luxe, I'll certainly try that. It may be a combination of this and making sure the boss is pushed down onto the spline all the way.

El cargador – Presumably this would only check for poor connections in the copper/brass ring? I think this is ok. It's where it touches (or doesn't touch) the corresponding ring in the boss as the wheel is turned (I think).

Bending the ring upwards is logical to make a firmer connection. But this also distorts the ring out of circular and would loose contact at certain points IF the boss is not pushed all the way down on the spline. A larger gap between ring and boss connection would mean the ring was more out or circular – if you get my drift?

Did you manage to fix this, I am having similar problem.

Having been messing around trying to fix my horn for a few days, I just tried this. Fixed in seconds!

Thank you.

Can I add a new query to this thread? I have a problem in that the fuse for my horn/interior light blows almost every time I press the horn.

Is there an obvious fix to this that I'm missing?

Just as an answer to my own question, someone on another forum suggested that I fit a rubber washer between the horn unit bracket and the car's body. That sorted it out straight away. (I hadn't thought of it as it'd been working fine for two years, untouched)
