Styling 500 Chrome bumpers

But here is one of the headlamp-surrounds which was pictured when new in an image earlier in the thread. We are four months on, the car has not seen much rain but I have to admit it has seen a little bit of road salt. The surround is in a disastrous condition and looks worse than the 50 year-old ones which I threw away. This time I am actually going to complain to the supplier.

Oh my goodness, that's 4 months worth of wear? Incredible, I think my (allegedly) 50 year old ones looked better. Modern technology

Terrible. I would be having a word with the vendor who sold these to me. Name and shame them if you get no recourse.

The seller is a very reputable company and when I previously had a problem with a supposedly reconditioned, mechanical item which seemed not to be so, they had a good system in place to deal with my complaint and were at pains to encourage me to speak to them first.

The other problems with this sort of matter are that I usually buy things from the European mainland which can make return postage an issue and combine that with the low-value of this sort of item and it becomes a principled rather than a practical exercise to complain.

I would be prepared to pay a lot more in order to get a better quality.

but how many people would.....
this is the constant question....

Simple example... a gear linkage connector cost about £8-10 and can last a few years or fall apart after 1... Originals can last 10-20 years...
So would someone pay £25 for one likely to last so long?
Perhaps if they did the miles you do... but for the 3-4 outings per year???

Good point. I'm sure there are hundreds of pairs of replacement chrome rims out there that have been on cars for years and still look unchanged. The thing is, look at the odometers on the same cars and they too are likely to be hardly changed.[emoji3] I have to agree with you. As I've veered this well off-topic I can at least speak well of the pattern gearbox mountings which, when I was handling them last week, had coped well with 18 months' hard usage and a liberal dose of gear oil.

The bumpers on my RHD 500 L are still the original ones complete with tow bar holes in the rear one. My issue is as somebody has mentioned is the spacers I will be taking them off for re chroming next winter. I built the car from virtually a kit of parts and had to source some bits. I bought door handles headlight trim etc and after two years they are now rusting.( I live near the sea ). The headlight trim is very thin metal has anyone got a better source.

It is difficult to get top quality chroming in the UK, but I have found a company, family owned and run, who Rolls-Royce think is good enough to use.:----

fiat500 is this the type of bumper you bought? I. E the more expensive ones that they refer to as 45 micron, a-quality?

.

I did get the better spec ones and they are holding up exceptionally well heading for a year later. There is a small amount of surface rust on the back which would polish out easily. When Axel Gerstl refers to better quality items I have fould that it alwats pays to get them,
