First post here - sure it won't be the last if this goes to plan though :)

My father in law no longer wants the responsibility of looking after his original '65 500 (had it from new), he'll happily give it to us, and my wife is very keen to keep it in the family. Catch is that it's in Rome and we're in Scotland. Can anyone recommend a company that will transport it?

My first thought was to drive it, but I'd struggle to fit the time in for a couple of months at least, and not the best time of year by then.

I think we understand the paperwork needed, though any tips will be appreciated.

I've had a search but I didn't see any specific threads, point any out if I've missed them please.

If you can wait until next spring or summer, I could take you in my 500 and escort you back.

Thanks for the offer. I'm hoping we'll sort it before that, if not driving becomes an option and I might take you up on it.

I am being serious, but perhaps a bit more realistically, have you tried Shiply? I guess they must do international quotes and you usually get them within minutes.

Thanks - I'd never even heard of Shiply before... like the idea, I'l give it a go.

This is it btw. New in 1965 then a few months ago.
Mother in law in both pics.

You can try Duncan...

He brought my 500 back from Rome to Cambridge for ~£700. He came recommended by another member on here, and likewise I can recommend him too.

You'll need to complete a PRA export form in Italy, about €45. In the Uk, you'll need to complete a NOVA form online at the HMRC site. There will be no VAT or import duties to pay. You'll need to get an MOT and the register it with the DVLA.

I hope this helps

Steve

Sounds like a road trip, count me in.

540 miles less for me :)

So amazing to have that set of pictures and that personal story to your 500! : )
Also gives me an idea what mine might look like when its done as all but the interior color will be very similar!

A 500 will fit inside the back of a large Transit, Renault or M/Benz van---just an option if you want to bring it back yourself (but not drive it)
