Hi

I'll be picking up a 1972 500F, likely next week. Its a well maintained and regularly driven car, getting annual maintenance and oil changes from a nearby repair shop. The car starts, runs and drives well with a fantastic body but some oil film visible. It does have a fiat 126 driveline swap, which was done years ago so its proven.

The thing is I will have to drive it home about 150 km across the Netherlands. I can only get so much due diligence before settings on a fairly long first drive - checking oil level, tires, air filter, fuel level etc.

I'm looking for recommendations for supplies, spares and tools which I should carry in the car, just in case.

I could not find anything on this forum after searching, thanks for any guidance you might have.

I am sure that question has come up within the last few months.
On a 150km drive I wouldn't really worry as long as you have a spare wheel and jack.
My policy has been to replace a lot of the smaller things and keep the old, working item as a spare in the car. some of the things I carry:

New spark plugs.
Fan belt
Fuel pump
Ignition points and condenser
Plug leads
Throttle cable
Fuel hose
Tape
Fuel hose clips
Light bulbs
Electrical wire

I have never needed any of them yet and the only roadside "repairs" have been to adjust the tickover. It sounds like you car will be OK.

I agree with Peter with regard to the parts to carry, but you will need a 'tool-roll'. Practically all nuts/bolts on the Fiat can be covered by 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 14mm and 17mm spanners--I would suggest that a
'combination spanner (open at 1 end, ring at the other end) for each size. I would also suggest a couple of 'flat' screw-drivers (1 to be long enough, and thin enough to enable you to adjust the carb mixture) and a couple of Phillips/PK (cross head) screwdrivers--make sure that the screwdrivers fit where they are required before you leave. If you are taking spare points, you will need feeler gauges; a couple of pliers (1 long-nose) and a medium sized hammer should also be included. This should make for a sensible tool-roll. As Peter said, if you go well prepared there is a very good chance you won't need any of them, but if you don't take them, you'll probably will!
150 km is only about 94 miles--I often easily cover that in a day of running about (and Peter most probably a darn site more) without any problems. The beauty of the 500 is that it so simple that 'bush mechanicing' will often get you back on the road if you are unlucky enough to have a problem--all the best with the trip.
