1966 disc brake upgrade

Hello all,

I have been pondering for a while upgrading to disc brakes on my 1966 500, but have been put off by the cost.

I came across these which seem quite reasonable and wondered if any forum members have these fitted or their views?

All input appreciated.

Many thanks

Peter

TinTin,
My car has 8" discs from a Cinquecento/Sciento - you may need to mod the caliper to fit your wheels. Check on the other forums for parts and the mod.

Ian.

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

I bought my five speed conversion through the seller mentioned and it arrived damaged - he was very difficult to deal with until I took official Ebay action - which is complicated because it was a purchase through the Italian Ebay site - required phone call to Ebay......

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

I have built up my front disc assembly (to be fitted as an 'over the winter' job) by purchasing some Cinquecento callipers, a pair of adapter plates and new discs. If you are sticking with original pattern (190pcd) wheels, Axel Gerstle does a good kit that only increases the front track by about 2mm, which means that you don't have to modify wheel arches. I have found his company very easy to deal with--never had a problem with them--go onto their 'tuning' section, then 'brakes'.

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

Hi TH

Axel does sell some seriously good kit but even with today's Rate of exchange it's still Gbp500 +. No doubt worth it but i am trying to find a cheaper solution. I do not mind the looks but they need to be fit for purpose.

I will be using the original wheels which I believe means they are 190pcd size.

Is the set up your creating for original wheels as well and will the track be increased?

Peter

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

I fitted this set of front discs that still allow you to use the traditional 190 pcd...

Here's a pic of the components...

They are available from a number of places including axel. Cheapest suppliers are in Italy, add about 30 if shipping from Italy, so range between 250-300....

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

Andrew / Steve

Thanks for the extra inf and pictures. Was any body work modifications required or did they fit with the standard wheel arches?

Either of these seem to be the way to go assuming no mods required.

Cheers

Peter

It was fine with mine with lower suspension standard steel wheels but wider 145/70 tyres. On the wider alloys, and even wider 165/60 tyres, the RHS needed a little fettling on the inner front seam.

cheers, Steve

Re: 1966 disc brake upgrade

Steve, I am running standard wheels and tyres so sounds like they will be ok too.

Thanks

Peter
