Technical Electrical issue.

Hi all.

Electrics are my weak point when it comes to cars and now my 500F has a fault.
The dipped beam and the horn have both stopped working. The fuses all seem ok and the earth on the steering wheel for the horn looks perfect. The horn was working fine but the dipped beam hasn't worked since the car was delivered.

Does the horn and dipped beam work off the same circuit/fuse?

The sidelights, indicators etc are all fine. Any help much appreciated.

Hi Steve unfortunately not different fuses and I can't see any common points on the wiring diagram. Do the high beams work?

Steve, easily diagnose the horn first; with a voltmeter or test bulb, check that there is a current in one of the cables at the horn. This should be there all the time but turn on the ignition to be certain...no need to press the horn. If there is, then clean up both terminals on the horn, refit the spade connectors and try again pressing the button. If no joy, remove the non-live wire at the horn, fit a temporary one and try this to the battery earth or another good earth. If no joy it's a faulty horn, if it sounds then its the earth. The horn is earthed back to the internals of the horn button, for which more guidance would be needed.

Steve I assume you don't have a voltmeter? Can you get hold of one or buy one? You can get them for next to nothing on eBay or the alternative is a 12v bulb with some wires attached to it.

I can then explain where to check the different circuits to see where the problem is. Probably worthwhile getting some spare fuses as they always come in handy and poking around with the electrics always has the potential to blow fuses. You need the white 8 amp ones and some red 16 amp ones, there is only one red fuse and five white ones so you could buy something like this for a fiver and have enough for years ahead.
