Hello all,

Can anyone give me any advice on what size plates I should go for?

Mine's a 74 500L, but just got reg (Imported) and it's an A plate ?! 63?

I'm not too fussed about having the tiny Italian front plate as I don't think our number layout works the same as the regional intials on the Italian plates. But definitely don't want a yellow rear plate.

Thanks.

ps. If you've had them made where did you go?

Seems a bit odd the dvla have given you an A plate for a 1974 car????? They normally give you one from whatever year is representative in the British system so in your case M or N.

I don't know where that sits though with whether you have to have a white and yellow set of plates or you can have black with white lettering. The regs say post 1973 manufactured are meant to have white and yellow. But seeing as you have been given a A reg you could get away with it????? Also I believe as your car is an import you can fit smaller size plates but don't quote me on this????

Pre 1973 can be either white or silver letters on a black background. They can be raised individual digits or pressed plates. I have raised white letters on a black background as that is what originally came with the car and is in fact correct for the period in 1966. In fact they are the original plates given a refurb.

This place below, he was recommended on another forum and you can see the different styles. He also says he can supply Italian size plates so it maybe worth giving them a call as I am sure he knows everything about what you can and can't fit.

Thanks Tony,

I actually think it's a J reg.
Starts with an A, but ends in a J...it's the Suffix right?

In which case it is 70/71 ?

Do you reckon that changes things then...if it has a 1970 reg, then I could possibly get away with black & silver without picking up too much attention?

Hi

Here's a couple opf shots with what I deceided would ook goood on my Fiat 500L. It is an early 'L' Registered car from October 1972 thus black and silver plates are ok. The front plate is motorcycle size, at 279 m/m x 76 m/m and I have a standard size plate for the MOT, and if Mr Plod has gotten out of bed grouchy. (Not been stopped or spoken to at all yet, touch wood). There are numerous plate makers and suppliers out there, just a trawl on the internet will turn up loads.

Cheers
Hugh Jarce

Nice one Hugh, looks great!

What size is the rear plate, can you remember?

Yeah I don't think the police are going to be too bothered. They will just see an old Fiat and think oh that looks nice. Hopefully you won't get an overly officious MoT man who picks up on it but I would have thought he will see J reg and think that's fine.

I like Hugh's smaller plate on the front, looks better when the car is so small. In fact I would be surprised if the police even notice when you look at it in context, small car, small plate, looks normal.

He is mine at it looks too big for the car??? Thinking about it as I have one less digit than average, I could make it smaller by cutting the sides off???

Lovely plate that! How comes your reg is shorter? - just so?

Did you get it made? I really like it. Nice letters!

It's strange, I even surprised myself by not minding the plate across the front bumper. (I think the French 500s are like that). Which in theory shouldn't work, blocking that lovely chrome.

It can make such a difference can't it!

I've gone for the small plate on the front. Going on my reg ending on a J, does that make it a J reg (not to labour a point!).

Yeah just what came with the car originally. I had pressed plates the were mounted on the front panel originally with double sided tape and then after I dragged it out of the garage in 2013 after it had sat there for 17 years and decided it was about time to refurbish it in time for its 50 birthday in 2016. In the process of which I found the original number plates and decided to refurbish them in keeping with the era it came from.

Yes J reg would be a 1 August 1970 – 31 July 1971

You can find the whole restoration blog here, if you are bored and looking for something to read.:D

Also Peter's AKA FIAT500 on here.:worship: His is a real labour of love. Not many people would have taken it on.
