Hi
Does anyone know what the torque specification is for the large flange/pulley nut (at the nose of the crank - behind the centrifugal oil filter cover)?

Factory manual that covers models up to 'L' only had this reference for the earlier cars. I suspect they would all be the same.

Manual states "Tightening torque of 108.5 ft.lbs - 15.000 kgmm".

According to my (original, by S.P.A. Fiat) workshop manual, the torque setting for the 'Generator and fan drive pulley hub screw' (part no. 987109, size 24MCx1.5) is:- 108.5ft.lb. (15,000 kg.mm.) I am assuming this is the correct part as all other engine torque settings are in the 6-26 ft.lb torque range. hope this helps(y)
 
Guys,

now that we have all come back with the same thing, why do I now look at the figure and think it is an awful lot of torque?

lots of others won't get it but unfortunately I did......

Back to the nut. Is it partly due to the fact that the rotational force will be trying to undo the thing?

Rotational forces - I guess so though I'm not an engineer and wouldn't really know. Some cars did the left hand / right hand thread thing on their wheel nuts so as to prevent them from coming off if they were loose. It doesn't matter what thread they are if they are tight. I guess this one is so tight because if the bolt loosens and comes off, all hell will break loose. As insurance, it's also secured with a locktab. The flywheel bolts aren't torqued up quite so tightly though there are more of them. Also, some of the suspension components on other cars, particularly the bits that fix the suspension to the car, are done up very tightly.

Finally, is it a bolt or a nut? I'd call it a bolt, but as I've been screwed before on technical issues, I'll washer my hands of any responsibility and in-stud, consider your answer with great interest.

I did also assume that its a lot (108.5 ft lb). It rotates clockwise so it should not come off with rotational force, if anything it will tighten more so. No wonder I had a hell of a job undoing it.
