Technical fuel line

Yes you are correct I remember now that mine was also rubber and worn from the cables passing through the tunnel but I replaced it with copper hose and it was easy to pass through. Much safer, I have to note here that I was seconds away from getting fire with my old Renault 8 gordini so I am kind of sensitive when talking for fuel lines.

If I decided to use solid pipe I think I would take it under the floor or outside the tunnel using plenty of metal clips to keep it in place. If you fit modern flexible pipe carefully using the original clipping points and following the original route I think you are less likely to find the pipe in contact with cables than if you use rigid pipe.
I think solid pipe should be used, as original, where it passes around the engine bay.

Crikey that’s a lot of mucking around. My preferred method is to suck on the end of the rubber fuel pipe before it enters the fuel pump, to siphon it through, get prepared to spit out any that enters your gob and pinch the pipe together and attach it to the fuel pump. 1 minute job done. Horrible taste of petrol in your mouth for the rest of the day. But hey I am still alive!!!! Allegedly!:D

Obviously too many hours of misspent youth siphoning petrol from one banger to another. All mine I hasten to add!!

Some people have a deplorable disregard for health and safety :D. but obviously that's the actual way that "normal" people do it. :D Once primed you have the opposite problem....it just won't stop!

Thanks for the tips again.

I took off the cover today and found this underneath.
Quite a few wires and tubes, and the grommets were quite tight meaning I doubt I could've pushed the tube through behind the old one.

There are two U clamps that the fuel hose travels through and even with the cover off the hose managed to pop out, so good advice given. And it actually didn't take that long plus 2 metres was exactly enough hose.

Only question I have now is that I'm left with a 2m hose full of air. Is this going to cause a problem when I go to start the car?
Bambino,

Apologies replying to old post...

Was the 2 meters you quoted enough to reach tank to fuel pump without relying on any of the old pipework or did you terminate at the last bit of solid pipe near the tunnel exit?

Thanks

Hi there,
No worries! Yes the 2 m was if I recall correctly exactly right. Either that, or there was a very small amount that I trimmed off, but I had no problems reaching from fuel tank to fuel pump on my 500D with the two meter pipe ;)

Many thanks for your quick reply.
I have a D as well so should all should be OK ...

Just to finish off regarding my start stop / hot restart issues, having replaced the entire fuel line with stainless steel braided plus:

Coil
Points conversion
Distributor cap
Rotor Arm
Fuel pump

It finally turned out that my 28 IMB was suffering from the dreaded flange distortion ( so bad that I am not sure its salvageable ). In any event a brand new one came up at a good price so many fingers crossed for the next road test!

hi, have your start/stop hot restart issues been resolved? Mine is difficult to start when the engine is hot. thanks

Sorry for a much delayed response!

All resiolved. Starts every time , hot or cold.
Hasnt missed a beat for 10 months!
