Hi everyone,

I got another question due to another issue. My right front blinkers don't work at all, while the rear right stays on very dimly. My left turn blinkers are very rapid. What is the issue? I cleaned the bulb connects already.

If it is grounding issue, please let me know which wires and where to check. Once again, I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Frank

Frank,

I have a 69F so what I relate is what I have experience on. I have been told that with electrics, 'once the smoke gets out there is going to be a problem!'

Could be the earth, power or a bulb or a combination all. The thing to remember is that if anything is wrong on one side, the whole system has the potential to play up. I think this is what you are seeing.

Please refer to my dodgy photo. You are only concerned with the side and front blinker and not the mess of wires for the headlight.

Check the bulbs first, though I think it unikely that both have failed together.

The front 'side' blinker gets earth because the light is bolted through the body. If the bolts (studs) are rusting then I think you will lose earth and the side blinker will not work.

The front blinker has an actual short black earth lead. This will be held somewhere against the body. In my case this short wire is held in place by one of the nuts that also holds the side repeater on. You can see this black wire and the nut that holds it in the photo. If this wire is not earthed properly the front indicator will not work. Throw your head under the bonnet and have a look and this will make sense. Again if the earth is an issue you need to clean the connection up and bolt it up again.

(Why the side blinker is earthed by the bolts holding it to the body and the front blinker has a dedicted wire I don't know.)

Now with my setup where both are earthed to the same point, if the earth at that point is bad, you would experience exactly what you are experiencing.

From your description I suspect you have a problem with the earth on the right front or a bulb failure.

Go carefully, the bolts holding the indicators are small, if they are rusty there is a risk of snapping them. Please let us know how you get on.

(You could make up a short lead with alligator clips on each end and earth the front idicators to a new source and see if that cures the problem. Less risk of breaking something and fairly quick and simple to do)

Regards

As Joe says, this sounds very much like an earth issue. My Dad's MGB had very similar symptoms, which turned out to be caused by a bad earth connection on the headlight.

Got home today from my road trip. I decided to take the 500 around the block for a quick drive and noticed the right bliners started working again after revving the engine a bit.
