Starter cable question

The starter cable on my 1972 500L has so much slack in it that it won't engage the starter from inside the car. On the starter end of the cable there is nothing supporting the cable sheath. Shouldn't there be a bracket of some sort by the starter to hold tension on the cable sheath? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks.

Re: Starter cable question

Hi,

I had this problem recently on mine, all of a sudden the starter cable went slack etc.

There should be a small plastic clip on the offside heater pipe that runs from the engine to in to the car, if you clamber under the car you can see a small slot cut out of the tinwork that it clips in to, when clipped in it holds the cable. I did try and take a photo to show you but my car is too low to get my camera under i'll have another go tomorow and jack it up if your still lost.

At the moment mine is held up with some strong cable ties as I havent yet found a replacement clip (clips dont come with a new cable either) its so far doing a short term quick fix!

Re: Starter cable question

Thanks Panda Van. I'll go take a look and zip tie it up. I love these forums. I appreciate everyone being patient with all my "newbie" questions. Thanks again for your help.

I'm new here. I bought a '70 500L a few weeks ago and am beginning to work on it. I've maintained my own Vespas for years, but this is my first time working on something with 4-wheels, 2 cylinders, or 4-strokes.

I have a growing problem with the starter cable popping out of the clip. It started out only happening occasionally, but it's gotten to the point where it happens every time.

Any advice on where I might get a replacement clip in the U.S. and how to rig it to work temporarily?

Thanks,
Rusty
