hey guys fiat 500's have conventional ignition coils. The one that i have looks very similiar to the WASTED Spark ignition with electrical ignition.

here is a pic:

Do you think that this is the wasted spark ignition, or is it the regular fiat 500 ignition coil, can anyone upload pics of your ignition coils? thanks

wasted spark from later fiat 126...:)...the original spark plug leads and HT lead from coil to distributor would have passed thro the clips on the cowling and cylinder head cover...

I am thinking that the HT cables from this coil go to the plugs and your distributor will not have a regular cap, but a flat black capped device with a feed wire from the coil to it? looks like the original 12v distributor feed wire from ignition has been cut and taped to feed the wasted spark coil and distributor unit. Check these joints first they look kinda dodgy and wrapped in masking tape?..soldered and heat shrink tubing I would suggest as the way to go...

Hi Patrick

Your ignition system certainly appears to have been modified.

Is there any chance you could post a picture of the distributor?

It certainly looks like the system that was fitted to Polish built Fiat 126's which did not have a conventional distributor cap, but had a blank cover rather than the normal cap with the HT leads coming out of it.

If this is the case, then you will either need to replace the coil with the dual HT outlet, or alternatively get hold of a conventional distributor if you want to revert to the original system.

definitely, just with my luck, it has a modified ignition. I will def. see if i can get some pics of the distributor.

thanks - pat

You may wish to take a look at the 126 replacement ignition parts on Ebay, to confirm diagnosis:-

If you need either of these parts used and cannot find in USA you could try www.club126uk.co.uk

Its an easy mod to gain another 1/4 hamster power...;)

If after fault finding, you do decide to revert - in addition to the 'normal' distributor you will also need a 'normal' coil and HT lead from dizzy cap centre to coil.............ooohhh and ditch the taped joints...

Dj,
Is it possible to post a pic of your whole engine bay? Frome the looks of the second picture, your car once had a "regular" coil mounted on the lower right side. But its hard to give you an idea with out seeing what distributor you have.

i have confirmed that it is the wasted spark ignition coil from the 126, i purchased a new one, and still no luck with anything.

the spark plugs still do not spark. the fuse box is confirmed to be working, and the wires are all connected and live.

what else could be possibly wrong, these cars dont really have that many electrical parts.

maybe the voltage regulator??

Thanks guys, I found out that the ignition coil was in working condition, and that there was a small metal wire from the condensor that was causing a short for the engine.

i will be cruising to 60's music in no time.

thanks for everything guys!
