hey guys, i have this 69, fiat 500L. i just got it from italy, it was running beatifully until the generator light went on!.

i purchased another generator for it because it wouldnt charge the battery, but didnt install it yet.

- i would make it run for a few minutes everyday off a battery booster, because it wouldnt start straight off the dead battery.
- today it wouldnt start with the battery booster anymore?

-my suggestion would be that since the battery booster is very powerfull is too much for this car and possibly burnt out the ignition coil since it does get very hot. when i try to start it everything works such as light, and radio, but the engine just turns and turns. infact if i were to take out the key, it would make the same starting noise as if the key were inside?

Any Ideas??

thanks - pasquale

Assuming you pull the lever between front seats to turn starter over, it sounds like you have a stuck contactor atop the starter motor :p...which can be:-
a.) seized pull cable from lever to contactor operating arm. free n lube or replace.
b.) seized contactor operate arm pivot. remove starter and free, claen n lube.
c.) stuck contacts in contactor unit from arc'ing. remove contactor unit and dress contacts or replace the contactor unit...

Once it stops turning over, try battery charge n normal starting...

hope it's an easy fix.....;)

i have a brand new replacements starter, as well as other spare parts. i checked the grounds, and traced back all wires in the engine bay as well as along side the car under the carpets, front trunk, electrically the car is sound? believe it or not. everything that should work, works.

I changed the fuel filter, doubled checked the gas tank connections, to see if fuel was being send to the motor. I threw some fuel into the carberator, that didnt work. i threw some starter fluid, and that didnt work either.

all in all i tried for about 4hrs, with still do luck.

therefore, i believe that the jump starter was just too strong and had to have burnt out the ignition coil, which i happened to find on ebay united kingdom.

as to your question, it still starts from the right level between the car seats.

- its hard to describe, but as i said before, the engine turns, but thats all it does. The spark plugs dont spark even with additional metal contact, so either thier isnt a correct ground somewhere or its just out of luck:(

- it tough having a fiat 500 in new york, because i am 1 of very few people out here who has a fiat still and its impossible to find a mechanic.

thanks alot, i will be trying that out as soon as i can decipher those images. I will definitely keep you updated.

turns out this car has the modified wasted spark ignition from a fiat 126.

i purchased a new one off ebay, and still no luck. the spark plugs dont spark at all. I checked the wiring and that seems to be ok. i also checked the fuse box and that worked as well?

What else could be wrong the voltage regulator?

I FIXED THE PROBLEM!!!!

after what seemed to be and endless time spent without hopes for the little cinquino, i am glad to say, that i had found what the problem was.

fortunately there was metal from the old condensor that was touching the metal of the engine housing very very faintly. Without hopes and out of desperation, and gave her the benefit of the doubt and she fired right up!

This little short, was causing me all these problems this entire time! fortunately for me, until the weather clears, i will be cruising around brooklyn listening to good ol Italian music from the 60's in no time.

thanks for all your help guys.
i will def. send thanks to all those who replied.
