I don't think the crank from the 1050 will fit your 903 is that what you need it for?

No, I'm gunna swap out the 903 for the 1050 completely, but keep my 4 speed gearbox if I can as don't really wanna start hacking up the engine bay. I'll probably chuck it on a stand and do a complete rebuild of it depending on the state of it, whats the head like on the 1050??

Yeah it is, and I really don't know what to do! Every weekend I have a different opinion on whether or not to sell it! But I think I'm going to keep it and get the 1050 in there!! I need to chuck some money at it I thinks!

Ah that’s a good point with the gear box!

I’m unsure on the head as I haven’t had it apart but if your going for a rebuild I would get the 127 sport head! I’ve seen two on eBay Italy at the moment for around €120-140 which is what they tend to go for.

Ah I’ve been there before. You won’t regret keeping it though! Such a cool car, especially in that blue! (y)

Yeah, the gearbox could be a problem!

With the sport head, what carburetors would fit on that? And would I need to get a new exhaust manifold and all that?

I know!! But I'm struggling to find somewhere dry enough to keep it! Mums getting a bit aggressive with me keeping it in the garage!

Depends how mad you want to go I guess! Brazil engine is an 8port and I've seen manifolds for it to fit 2x 36 DCNF but I think the sport engine as standard had a 34 DMTR on it.

Yeah not having a garage doesn't help. I've just tried to convince myself that rust adds character

So would your your valve cover and carb mount not fit a sports head? Is your 34 DMTR up for sale then? Got any pics? And how much would you want for it?

It defiantly does!! It's the scares of battle!!!

Haha!

My valve cover/manifold wouldn't fit the 1050 but the carb would! You'd need a manifold like this http://maranellohouse.com/myPictures/engine painted 1.JPG

Yes I'm pretty sure I have 3 so I'll try to get you some pics soon as some of my parts are not at my house at the moment, so I'm borrowing some of my grandparents garage space!

Am I right in thinking the inlet and exhaust ports are on the same side of the head??

Sweet! I look forward to them! Haha yeah, there can never be enough garage space!!!

Also, is the bore in the 1050 the same as the 903 just with a longer stroke length??

The 1050 ohc 127 sport engine is completely different to the 903cc.

It tends to be confused at times with the A112 Abarth 1050 ohv engine (which is essentially the 903 engine with a longer stroke and bigger bore with the addition of some Abarth goodies like the crank too!)

The 127 1050 has a bore/stroke of 76(bore) × 57.8(stroke)mm I believe.
Where as the 903cc is 65(b) x 68(s)mm and the A112 Abarth 1050 is 67.2(b) x 74(s)mm.

The 127 1050 also has 5 crankshaft bearings which is really handy compared to the 903 that has 3 (including the A112 1050). The engines with 3 crankshaft bearings can fail when stressed at high revs causing engine cracks unless you go down the expensive road of steel crankshafts and all the rest that comes with installing one! However its more for 7000-9500rpm screamers that you'd want to worry about having 3 crankshaft bearings!

Oh right, good to know!! The 1050 does look completely different to the 903 so I was wondering how it would work...

I'm a little worried about fitting the engine and head under the hood, is it a tight fit?? The sports heads on eBay look huge compared to the tiny little 903 head I've got atm!

Ahh OK, so the exhaust goes back underneath the engine? Surely that's bad for keeping the inlet air as cool as possible, or does it not reallyake much of a difference?

Sorry for the late reply!

I’ve seen quite a few series 1s that have had a 1050 dropped into it. I would double check that you don’t need to have different mounts etc. I would imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult or it would be a straight swap as the series 2 came in 903 and 1050 displacements and I can’t see Fiat making it difficult for themselves to swap between the two. But I would certainly double check!

Yeah all pre-crossflow engines suffered from that. The minis still perform very well and they have a pre-crossflow engine! I couldn’t tell you how much of a difference it makes but I do know the 127 sport engine performs very well!

I really dont know what to do now, ive just got a really good career opportunity but it means that i will not have time for my fiat and wont have room to work on it even when i do get the time, so ive decided to sell it. i really dont want to but its only going to fall apart if i keep it!

Very sorry again for the late response! That's a shame but I totally get it! Do let me know if you ever change your mind! :)

Out of curiosity how much would you want for it? It's probably very much out of what I can afford as I have another project but I guess it's always worth asking :)

I'm afraid to say I've already sold it... A guy near Plymouth came and got it the other day
