126 air cooled engine upgrades?

Hey what’s happening everyone!? Was wondering what kind of engine upgrades could be done to the 650cc engine and what websites I should checkout if there is any.

Re: 126 air cooled engine upgrades?

A basic starter package that could give you a reasonable power increase would involve cylinder head work, carb, camshaft and exhaust. Loads of info on the 500 classic section where guys have fitted tuned 650 engines to classic Fiat 500 cars also look at the club126uk site.

The best upgrades for the 126 engine are a bigger oilpan and oil radiator also a nice 123 electronic ignition.I have had my car for4 years now and they seem to have 2 problems they overheat and the ignition also cause's problems if already upgraded my cooling system with a 4L oil pan and a oil radiator

Re: 126 air cooled engine upgrades?

Hi not sure if anyone can help me with this one! I have a 500L 1972 with a 126 650c.f. Engine, 123 ignition, Weber 40 dcoe carb, at the moment it is running on the standard mechanical pump, with very, very, difficult start problems from cold. I have been advised to fit an electric push pump under the bonnet, I need to know if it will help the starting problem? Also I would like to remove the existing mechanical pump but if I undo the two holding nuts on the pump, when I try to pull out the pump it won't come out as the alternator is in the way! It seems a big job to remove the alternator. So is it o k to just leave the old pump in situ? & re direct the fuel line into the new pump?

Re: 126 air cooled engine upgrades?

Hi, if you replace the mechanical with an electric pump the carb will fill up as soon as you switch the ignition on unlike the mechanical pump which takes time to fill up the carb hence you need to keep cranking to start it to start. Have you checked the carb and choke is set up properly? If you do fit an electric pump you should fit a cut off switch which will cut power to the pump to stop petrol issuing out if in an accident. Yes you can leave the mechanical pump in place, although most remove it and replace it with a blanking plate.
