Hey all, my name is Beth, and I'm looking at buying my first car! :D
I am considering buying a '75 (I think it's a 75, anyways) Fiat Spitfire, and I have some questions first!

I live in the US, is a Fiat going to be super expensive to fix?
Is it good on gas? (I assume it would be, because I think it's a 4 cylinder!)
Have you found them to be good, dependable cars?

Just a couple questions I had, for all of you Fiat owners, :).

As Steve said, Triumph made the Spitfire.
If you need to know anything about them i may be able to help. Ive had one for about 6 years now, and it was my brothers for about another 6 before that. :D

I don't think a fighter plane was what she had in mind though. :)

Also, they run on petrol. Gas is the stuff that operates your oven. :)

Our American friends run their cars on Gasolene, or Gas for short. Same as our petrol ;)

Oh, and we run some of our cars on Gas in the UK! LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) :p

And a Fiat Spider is one of the more popular Fiats over in the USA. Probably the only popular Fiat!

Yes, it is good on Gas mileage compared with a big old V8 Yank Tank, and there are also a few Fiat specialists in the USA. There's one in Los Angeles, but I can't remember the name of it. There's also a US based Fiat club, but again I can't remember the address (sorry :( ). Maybe a Google search will help you find it.

Anyway, good luck with your first Fiat Beth!

Well, I guess my dad has decided it's not worth it.
Apparently the owner said that it spits out smoke, and that problem seems to be getting worse the more he drives it. He is thinking that it's the rings that are the problem, which my dad says means the engine needs work, which will be major mulah to fix.

Then, he said that it wont go into 3rd gear! That's transmission, and that's SUPER expensive to fix.

It looks like that car wont be an option anymore, which kind of stinks, because it was nice. :(

(Oh, and I realized after I had posted that it was a Triumph, not a Fiat! Sorry!)

Hello Beth, best thing to do would be to get a fiat 124 spider, or fiat X19. Either car would be easier to work on than a triumph spitfire, and you would have the back up of 'Fiat Lancia Unlimited' and 'the fiat forum' :)

Believe me having had a X19 and a Spitfire myself, the X19 is nowhere near as easy to work on. The spitfire is a really easy car to work on, the X19 was a pain in the arse.

Never touched an X19 but the Spitfire is so simple. I was working on that from the age of about 12

Ah, but which is the nicer car to drive?

A British 'sportscar' (I use the term lightly...) based on Austin A35 mechanicals and an OHV engine, or an Italian OHC mid-engined light footed and rev happy stylish targa top?

I know which one I'd have... ;)

As i say, ive only had a Spitfire, never touched an X19.

So i would have to say Spitifre, purely as i would know exactly what i was getting (and have :D ).

Whoops! Just realised I was talking about an MG Midget and not a Triumph Spitfire

Mind you, the same still applies! Spitfire has a swing spring rear axle (careful the rear wheels don't tuck in when cornering!), and an engine based on a very old Triumph/ Standard ohv unit.

But I would definitely agree that the Spitfire is by far the easier car to work on with its flip front. Good thing too as you'll need to work on it lots

*Chas runs off and hides from the flaming he'll get from Spitfire owners* :p
