I just agreed to buy a rather neglected '70 850 spider off a guy that just inherited the car and doesn't want it. The car needs some work, namely the brakes aren't working and the key is broke off in the ignition. Does anyone know where I can get a service manual for the car or tell me how to get the old ignition switch out of the car to replace it with the one I just ordered.

I really want to get this little car back on the road after untold years setting in a field. I have brought a few motorcycles back to life over the years and vintage Italian cars have always fascinated me. This is going to be a fun project :D

Re a service manual, the Spider 850 is afaik the same as the 850 coupe, you might try Haynes Manuals in the US or Amazon for a secondhand copy, also I've heard that Bentley in the US do shop manuals for nearly everything.

Re removing the ignition switch, if it's the same arrangement as the 850 Coupe, you need to be able to turn the key (I know you said it's broken, but didn't say if it can be turned still!) to iirc the first position, I think Acc., in order to retract the steering lock bolt, remove 2 or 3 small philips head screws holding the ignition switch into the mounting plate ( which fits around the steering column) and then depress the spring loaded plate on the side of the switch. Examine the new switch when you get it and try turning the new key and you'll see what I mean by the above. Hope this helps.

I have a 72 that the key was broken off in. I went through three drill bits and it looked like there was nothing left of the ignition before it finally released. I tried to find an old locksmith that could come out and just turn the ignition to the first position. I would have gladly paid for a house visit instead of tearing the guts out of it. If you do have to drill it, watch out for the washer arm. When you get to drilling and moving the drill all around you might get carried away and break the arm. Don't ask me how I know....

Could have used a broken key extractor tool. ;)
