I have a 1980 Fiat Spider 2000 with fuel injection and my car was built in October 1979 which seems to make a difference on some parts. Last week I removed my old Bosh alternator with a replacement from Vicks. It was a “Pain” to get out but after some effort and choice words I removed the bar above the alternator and the alternator. I put the new alternator in very easily but when I tried to tighten the belt I could not get it tight enough and the belt slipped. So I took the bar above the alternator off to see if it would go on another way but it would not. So I added two spacers to make a bar a bit longer. But that does not seem to help either. So I thought I would ask for so help!!!
I started the car yesterday and it made quite a racket and the belt was slipping especially if I pressed the gas. Also when I turned the car off and took the key out the lights stayed on. So I possibly I got something reversed. Any help on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Well I posted my question then went out of town for over a week.
Yep it is the pulley size the new one is 3” and the old one is 3 ½” and I have found a V belt that I can tighten. Of course It is raining now and since my Fiat has not been out in the rain for who knows how long so I plan to start her up as soon as it stops and I can see how she dose. I will post what happens then. Thanks for the advice.
