Hello all. I just bought my wife an 81 2000. It has been sitting for 5 years. I am looking forward to restoring it for her. Right now I am just trying to get it running. I found the fuel tank rusty, so it is being boiled and lined. So for the time being I am trying to get it running with the fuel line and return just stuck down in a 5 gallon gas can. That should work correct, just to get it running?

Also, I installed a new pump and filter. The pump seems to come on only when the car is cranked. Most come on when the car is in "on". (the first click where all the dash lights come on) Is this right for these cars. Will it stay on after the car starts?

Thanks in advance for the help. I restored a 66 Mustang and found these sites a great help!

The fuel pump operation is normal for a fuel injected Spider: It runs initially when cranking to get fuel to the cylinders, after it starts, there is a switch in the airflow meter that controls the pump - air passing through the meter moves the "flap" which triggers the pump to run therefore when the motor is not running the flap is closed and no power goes to the pump (this is a "safety issue" so if you wreck the pump won't keep running.

Thanks George. I am sure this won't be the last time I have questions. Jeff
