Is it possible to reposition the distributor on a '78 124? I have noticed that the plug wires coming out of the distributor point towards the firewall and I believe that the wires are getting in the way of closing the hood easily.

so, the answer to your question is YES, the dizzy can be repositioned to allow the wires to point away from the firewall. in either position, the clearance is tight! that is the reason for the bump on the hood.

Thanks for the photo. it helps a lot. What's the best way to reposition the dist? Do I take it out and turn, say a quarter turn, to realign the the wires? I used to have a '73 850 and did not have this problem. I had pretty much 180 degrees of play on that one.

i would set the engine to TDC, then pull the dizzy off the engine, reposition the rotor shaft and the dizzy as required.

On some engines (I'm unsure of exactlty which ones) you can relocate the distributor to the other side of the engine, being driven by the auxiliary shaft.

i don't think that option is available after the 1438 cc engine, certainly not by the time you reach the 1755 cc engine.
