Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to Fiat. I just purchased a 1972 Fiat Spider with a garage full of parts. The car was purchased with the intention of a full restoration, and believe me, it needs one. The body is good, almost no rust...and the engine runs...but I have not driven it very far because the interior is out. The prior owner began to strip the vehicle for restoration, but then lost interest and sold the car instead.

My question is...where do I start? Does the Spider start at the mechanic ensuring the engine is fit...or do I get the bodywork and paint done first?

Your opinions, directions and expereinces would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to your advice

I would have the mechanicals checked/repaired/rebuilt first. Most mechanics working on the engine, tranny, suspension etc. will scrape, scratch or damage the paint in some way if a lot of work is required. That said, if the engine has to be pulled out of the car, have the bodywork done at the same time so the engine compartment can be resprayed without too much difficulty. Whatever you do, don't address the interior until the body work is completed.

before you invest any money at all, inspect the shock towers and the floor pans. if they are rusted beyond repair, then the car is not worth putting any money into.

then... once that inpection is passed, then brakes are next. once you can stop reliably, you can work on getting the engine and drive train into shape. then suspension.

THEN, paint and body, and finally the interior.
