Greetings all once more. Have been using my car very rarely in recent months, and noticed was struggling to engage second gear, which I just lived with for a while. This has developed into having to set off in third, with only fourth to move into on an 80 mile trip last week - which was good fun. Fifth and reverse don't even seem connected anymore. All leads to replacement gearbox I reckon!

Trouble is the one in was a replacement and was never that great from when it was put in (synchro 2-3, 3-4 which I just nursed through). How do I go about sorting one without knowing if it's a sound one or not? Any advice would be gladly taken onboard.

Also, the poor guy that's done my work over the years in S10 Sheffield is in ill health - does anyone know somebody not a million miles from Sheffield that I could go to see about it all? In another world I'd love to take on such a task, but in this life I'd do more harm than good!

Many thanks for any pointers.... Glenn.

Either find a low mielage box and cross your fingers or get the syncros replaced. They go for about 750 on eBay when done but I'm sure you can get it done cheaper.

I don't know any specialists local to you sorry.

Checked the rubber connection under the car? The ' lollipop '...

1 hour from Sheffield in Hull is a fiat gearbox specialist. He has been working on them for 30 plus years. Mike at Willis Auto Engineering in Albert Avenue. He charges around £200 plus the cost of the parts. All parts are available from Eurosport. He will strip the box and tell you part you need so you can buy them.
But: before going that far. Check the oil level. and use mineral 20/50 Engine oil.
