Is there a trick to opening the Gas Cap on these?
I just got this car from an Auction on Ebay.

Ready to put Gas in it and get it fired up.
Can't for the life of me get the metal Gas Cap open!
There isn't a lock on it that i can see. Seems to just be a Metal Cap thats on there to good...
Any help is appreciated

Shawn

Metal gas cap? Try WD40 overnight.
What does this metal gas cap look like? They are usually black plastic, ocasionally with a lock. I've never seen a metal one.
And welcome to the forum!

Its flat on top with a ridge.
Straight ridges on the side.

I will go down and take a pic in a few.

Thank you for the welcome too :)

Yes take a photo then we can get a better idea. They usually just screw on, if it turns in a circle without coming off there is a lock to undo.

Sledge,

There isn't a lock on this one.
And there is no movement.
I soaked a whole can of Liquid Wrench on it.

Cause of the piece around it, Not easy to get anything on it for grip..

Heres the pics I took this morning..
Broke the plastic off the outside of the cap.

Soaked it all with Penetrating Oil... Getting desprate here.
Beat on it, Did everything else...

Open the engine cover and look in the well under the gas cap, should be a large jubilee type clip holding the base of the threaded part under the gas cap. If you unscrew it you should be able to wiggle the whole thing right off the car.
You could also undo the 10mm bolts holding the back plastic surround as that may make it easier, it may come off with the cap as well.
Then might be easier once its on the bench, or trash it and get another!

Thank you ,Sledge :)
Will keep you updated!
Took the girlfriend to Emergency. Will be here awhile. That Catalyst may have loosened it by the time i get back! Lol

If not going your method... will order the new type cap.
on the plus side. I don't think i have to worry about anything inside the Gas Tank! Lol

Ended up just ordering a new neck piece and cap...
Also wireing harness was half missing. So dropped another $317! lol

Also got a Bosch Wiring and Fuel Injection Diagrams and Troubleshooting.
Also ordered a new Timing Belt, and some other goodies..

Hopefully it will fix it.
Also ordered a premium pressure bleeding kit.
That should take care of the clutch! lol

I found to my delight that you can bleed the clutch on your own as the pedal stays down when the bleed screw is open. As long as the system is sound anyway. Best of luck getting it going. They are fantastic cars!

Thank you Purf :)
Ive been wanting an X1/9 for at least 20 years.
I'm really not sure yet on the Clutch yet until I get rid of all this snow here.

Both the Brake and Clutch reservoir were both empty.
Clutch was completely to the floor till I topped it up.
Got some pedal back. And the Brakes are full on.
Waiting on the super bleeder with pump to get here. Bleed everything good.
See where I am at.

Only has 74,000 on it!
