lining the cam mark up with the spike on the cover on the top.Maybe i am wrong but if i line up the crank with the marks on the pulley the mark on the flywheel is not visible. With the cambelt off if i turn the crank one turn i see the mark on the flywheel or am i getting that wrong

This link here at the bottom of the introduction says about the flywheel being 180 degrees out

The guide puts it fairly clearly - It's been about 20 years since I last pulled the flywheel on a standard X1/9 and I'd clean forgotten they can go on wrong!

If the timing mark on the flywheel is off by 180 (90 of cam timing) then you need to use #2 or #3 for your setup procedure if you can't use the crank pulley timing mark for any reason (like it isn't there anymore - seen a few of those).

Yeah thanks Jimbro

I was getting confused i have turned the flywheel and changed the plug leads around now it starts fine.
