| Hello and need help in identifying hoses I’ve just joined the forum and want to say hello to everybody. Next, I need some help in identifying hoses. I’ve just bought a 1977 X1/9 and the PO plugged off a number of hoses that I now need to put back in the right places. 1) A big hose coming from the bottom and left hanging down underneath the engine. I guess this is the crankcase breather hose. There are 2 connectors (I don’t know what to call them, they are basically 2 holes to plug hoses in) underneath the air filter housing, one big and one really small. Am I correct if I connect the big hanging breather hose to the big connector? 2) What would be connected to the small connector? 3) At the base of the carburetor (if you look at it from the drivers side of the engine), I find 3 more connectors (for hoses) and right now they are plugged off. Where should these hoses be connected to? I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

| Re: Hello and need help in identifying hoses Sorry to answer a question with a question but it is very hard to give you any details on what you've provided. What we would need to know is which market your car was built for. European cars didn't have the substantial emission control systems that the Federal spec cars needed and subsequently they have a lot less connections as you describe. I'm guessing it is a Federal spec car that has been de-smogged in the past.

| Re: Hello and need help in identifying hoses
After staring at them for another while, and consult other sources, however vague to me, I made another guess that 2 of those 3 connectors at the base of the carburetor must be going to the charcoal canister. The problem is I can’t find the charcoal canister anywhere in the engine bay and fuel hoses seem to be in proper places, running tight and disappearing into the firewall. I haven’t looked underneath the car where the gas tank is to see if the canister is there but it is almost impossible for anybody to put the charcoal canister there, isn’t it? The remaining connector seems to have only one place to go, I think, that is to the small connector branching off the bigger one underneath the air filter housing. The distributor vacuum hose is already connected to the opposite side of the carburetor at the base of the carburetor. I don’t know correct automotive terms so I may not describe it clearly enough. If nobody understand what I’m saying, I will try to borrow a digital camera to take a few pictures. Thanks!

| Re: Hello and need help in identifying hoses I strongly recommend you get in touch with the enthusiasts at xweb, the majority have cars with anti-smog equipment and have the spares you likely need.
