Power loss / intermittent running

Hello all,

wondered if anyone suffered the following on an 87' Fiat X1/9 std 1500.
1) Poor idle until thoroughly warm
2) Poor power / pickup when accelerating
3) Uneven / rough running when thoroughly warmed up - like a misfire.

Would testing the compression ensure that all valves are ok (don't want to buy a tester unless it's useful) ?

How old is the coil, does it get very hot when this happens? I had this problem except mine idled fine it was just hesitant and powerless under load.
