Grande Punto power steering problems

Hi all GP owners!

Trying to share some of my experience with solving Grande Punto power steering failures, here at western power steering we have been reconditioning and replacing the EPS columns on the Grande from about 2009 when the first GPs' came out of warranty.

By far and away the biggest single cause of all GP power steering failures is the torque sensor in the column, the symptoms are usually a groan and vibration from the steering when stationary, also the steering can go out of balance whereby one lock will become lighter than the other. The ecu will allow the faulty sensor to function untill the faulty signal it produces reaches a certain point , when this happens the ecu will then shut the EPS down and your failure light and failure message on the dash will illuminate, usually switching off and restarting will reset the system and it will function again, untill the ecu detects the faulty torque sensor signal and once again switches the power steering off.

The torque sensors are a wearing part, they have small brushes inside that run against a carbon track, eventually these brushes wear away or break off, this is what causes the sensors to fail. Only on the latest EPS units fitted within the last 12 months have the latest generation of contactless Hall effect
sensors fitted which in theory should not suffer from the same failures, but time will tell.

The GP can also suffer from failures of the motor and ECU but these are much less common, usually these types of failure are sudden and complete and the unit will not come back to life.

The only solution for either type of failure of the GP EPS system is to replace the column, unlike the MK2/3 188 punto the motor and ecu are not seperate items that can be changed , the entire EPS column is one integrated unit that will have to be replaced as a complete unit.

Where possible we use higher quality components to rebuild the columns, hence we guarantee our reconditioned columns for lifetime (that you own the vehicle) we currently sell a complete column for 225 including vat and delivery, we also offer a fitting service for 75 for all members.

I am always happy to give help or advice to anyone needing it so feel free to give me a ring on 0117-9602906 or visit www.westernpowersteering.co.uk

Hi,
unless it's a sticky balljoint / other basic mechanical fault,

it's probably due to the torque sensor in the PAS system,

MultiECUScan should read any relevant fault codes, and potentially restore factory settings,

Re: Grande Punto power steering problems

Hi. Do you by any chance have the part number for the latest EPS unit that have the contactless hall effect sensors? I would like to make sure I am getting the new model rather than the old type with issues. Many thanks.
