i've done the same with a unit a few years ago, spent half a day trying to get it all back in, never could, realised must be a special machine to do it, and binned it....decent one second hand will save you all that aggro and time

Yeah, nobody in a safety-considerate country would recommend taking a seatbelt apart :)

The problem with seatbelts is that the locking mechanism has to operate in a released state for hundreds, thousands of times, but one day, it may be required to lock very quickly, and there's only one chance for it to do so. Do you feel like reducing that chance?

Probably if you engage the spring and keep turning that barrel a large number of turns, it may be re-wound, but you're still taking a risk and I, also, think you should just get a second-hand one. You didn't say why you had to take it apart in the first place, but I presume it was because it wasn't retracting properly, in which case it's very unlikely you'd be able to improve it anyway.

Dont you just love those springs, I also made the mistake of pulling one apart. The spring goes for the eyes...

As for putting it back together, don't bother. I tried and its a loosing battle.

alex,

Curiosity killed the cat..

Well i just wanted to see what's inside ! It was in perfect working condition, though.:bang:

Any chance of getting it back together ?? I may get a new one also as i can get one from my local dealer..BUT, the fact is, I rarely cross 110KMPH, and , wearing seatbelts still is not a common practice in our country:eek:

I am perfectly aware of the fact that a seat belt is the narrow line between life nd death in some cases, but nobody cares

Any way, just dont want to risc my family with a faulty seatbelt (it's of the passenger side) but just want to put the old one back together, as i am just curious about it..

Advise, if this can be done , in anyway.:bang:

spend the money, buy the unit new from the dealer, i've seen driving over there, and i always buckle up......better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it

as for a rebuild of it....sure try it, plan on having a lot of time and patience, and plasters for the cuts you'll get from the winding, and the more than likely probabilty it wont function as orginally designed.....

hehe

Thanks for that,jai.

Will buy a new one, indeed. But just want to try assembling it. Gonna try it today as today I'm off from office.:D

its easy to fix bit tricky to coil the strip back into the housing though n may blind you at any time if it happens to pop out and hit you in the eye.. Some of these seat belt mechanisms only work at a certain angle there is a mechanism inside on the rears that stops them working at an angle other than that of installation

I guess you did not translate the Italian sentence visible on the second photo properly :p
"Attenzione, non rimuovere" means "Attention, do not remove" :D
Please, do not try to reassemble the thing, we do not want to loose a fellow FF member (or his eye)!

well, czenda.

I could pronounce it well..But I have avoided such warnings before also (even the simplest transistor radio is labelled with // Caution -No user serviceable parts inside - Risc of electric shock// - So this is not the first time :D :D

But this is the first time I'm not been able to re-assemble one though..:(

Well going to try it tomorrow : So this must be my last day on fiat forum :D :D he heh.
