As in attached pic... snapped with my phone months ago.
Took me this long to get the phone working (formatting the memory card) so that I can remove the pictures from the phone memory!

Interesting how most of the time the oil temperature gauge barely registers but after a few full-throttle laps of Taupo, this was the reading - 110 degrees.

i used a quality synthetic oil with slick 50 on both my cars and noticed the temps stay stable, much improved even after a good thrashing, gets upto temp then stays no matter what, very happy i can sleep at night He He!!

That really really is hot mate, the oil cooler opens up once the oil temp get's up to around 84 degrees, and all the time i have drove mine it's never gone past like 50 degrees so i thought the oil cooler was pretty pointless, but i spose the more u giv it and less air moving through the car the hotter it gets..
Funny how ur oil temp is hotter than ur water temp..... lol (y)
 
Blown-head-gasket territory there, jamie86 :) Or hopefully just a shorted wire to the sender - but what about the no-charge warning light on with the engine running?

I don't think 110 degrees is too excessive for the oil - it doesn't boil like water... and this was a fairly isolated occurrence. It's actually good for the oil to get warm, as it dries out the water or fuel that contaminates it. It usually gets to about 70-80 on the gauge. Of course, the oil in the turbocharger bearing will be much hotter! I do make a point of using the turbo timer when it's particularly hot. I think I'd fit a fan to the existing oil cooler before I bothered fitting a bigger one?

My dad's 999cc used to overheat all the time. The temperature (pretty sure water temp), in london traffic, used to stray over the half mark and the fan turned on. Then went down by 1 degree, then fan went off, then back on again... ugh
 
Yeah my belt had snapped :eek: no probs though new belt and off it went :eek:

110 isn't too bad for oil much more than that i would be worried about though tbh.. What oil do you use different stuff for when on the track?

Car hasn't spent much time off the track :)
Nah seriously, I change the oil before it gets a thrashing, then it typically isn't driven for weeks before the next thrashing, and I use a semi-synthetic, 10W50.

You were lucky to get away with just replacing the belt - but I guess you knew that (y)

Dragyth: heating up to just over half way (almost 100 degrees) and the fan coming on isn't 'overheating' :) It happens all the time in the summer over here... and with some engines like my Alfa's V6, the normal running temperature was 100 degrees!

Oh yes very lucky I was expected H/G at the least possibly even warped head but was amazed until i killed it a few weeks later :eek:

110 degrees is pretty hot for your Uno Alex. My mk1 only ever got to about 100-105 but 110 is ok. I would not let it get any higher though.

It makes a huge difference how you drive it. If you rev it just another 500rpm more it will run a lot hotter oil temp. I ran my mk1 to about 6000rpm max, no point reving more with the standard turbo, my mk2 can rev all the way to 7000 if I want but the oil temp keeps going up if you do. I keep down around 6-6500 and it will run all day at about 110 degrees. This is the limit of the std oil cooler I guess.

Blair fitted a 16 row oil cooler and it runs 90-100 degrees reving it to 7000+ RPM.

Fan will do nothing unless you are stopped. The airflow driving at 100km/hr+ will far exceed the output of any fan.
